Child and Teen Therapy

Help for Your Child or Teen

Therapy for your child begins with an intake and assessment session with the parent(s). Sandy will gather information about your child's developmental history, educational situation, and family make up. She seeks to understand what the parent's desired outcome for counseling is during this intake and assessment session. During the first session with the child or teen, Sandy works to build the therapeutic relationship in order to establish the level of trust which enables him/her to share what is on his/her mind. In following sessions Sandy works together with the child and the parent(s) in order to make progress toward goals set by both the parent(s) and child. The sessions may be split between time with the child and time with parent(s) and time with parent(s) and child, depending on the needs of the child or teen and the parent(s). When sessions take place with the child/teen only, he/she is encouraged to share what was discussed in session with his/her parent(s) and is taught skills for articulating his/her feelings and needs. Play therapy or art therapy is often used in sessions. Sandy seeks to help children adjust to changes in life, build on the child's strengths, and nuture the family bond.

Sandy has taught grades 1 and 2 and has been a substitute teacher for pre-K through 8th grade. Her children have attended both Christian and public schools. She also homeschooled her two children, beginning in 3rd grade and 5th grade until the youngest was accepted into a college program at the age of 15.
